A high school student with ADHD may face challenges with motivation and managing schoolwork. An ADHD coach can support students by helping them create healthy structures for managing their responsibilities. Here is more information about the role of an ADHD coach for high school boys:

    System and Routine Building

ADHD, as a condition, can interfere with executive functions, project management, and time management. These are the skills that assist with regulation and organization. An ADHD coach for high school boys can help clients create systems and routines that align with how their brains work. A personal, individual approach offers more specific support for students with ADHD.

Coaches help students manage school-related issues by prioritizing tasks and building weekly and daily routines. This can include creating visible systems for organizing rather than relying on memory. Backpack organization methods and tracking routines specific to the student make them easier to use.

Creating their own routines, with support in place, makes the process more manageable while still fostering independence. This allows the student to avoid relying on external reminders from teachers to complete projects. It also helps students to improve organizational skills and may help improve overall grades and school performance.

    Task Initiation Support

Task initiation support can help prevent procrastination for class projects or other responsibilities. A coach can help high school students identify their avoidance triggers, allowing them to discover their personal reasons for procrastination and help create planning solutions. ADHD coaches support students by breaking down tasks into their simplest forms, which reduces overwhelm and makes it easier to begin a project.

Coaches also offer strategies for staying engaged while completing a task. This includes having timed intervals and having external cues for when to start and end. Resources for how to return to a task after an interruption help students balance multiple demands.

    Time Management Help

A coach can help students manage time blindness, allowing them to perform part-time jobs, homework, extracurriculars, and other responsibilities efficiently. A coach is able to work with a high school boy by offering time management strategies that help them plan their time effectively and create schedules. Having the support of another person familiar with ADHD allows a student to set realistic time expectations for themselves. Strategies to manage schoolwork include:

    • Mapping assignments
    • Having external reminders of when to transition to another task
    • Identifying due dates

Calendars and timers are helpful tools for planning ahead and managing transitions. A coach can also help students build flexible routines that act as anchor points in their day. Having time management strategies in place makes it easier for students to manage short- and long-term assignments.

    Accountability Assistance

Finding an ADHD coach for a student enables collaborative coaching that supports goal-setting. During a session, a student sets goals for themselves and reviews how previous goals went; this is done on a weekly or biweekly basis. The coach supports the student’s goals by celebrating successes and providing feedback, helping the student identify what hasn’t been working.

Having someone else who understands the student’s goals provides external motivation to complete them. It also helps with accountability, allowing the coach to identify the return of old routines or habits. Consistently completing goals over time helps the student build healthy habits.

Find an ADHD Coach for High School Boys

Working with an ADHD coach who prioritizes non-judgmental assistance for students and small, consistent changes helps prevent overwhelm while creating new routines. It also may help them stay organized and improve school performance. Some coaches provide free consultations to determine whether they are a beneficial fit for your student. Find an ADHD coach for your high school student today.
